Money, time, and wasted opportunities – the trade-offs from time-consuming manual form-filling are simply not worth it and have to go.
A survey done by Xerox found that more than 80% of SMEs want to eliminate paper from their invoices, report financials, and legal and human resource forms, in order to handle other time-consuming processes. Nearly half of the respondents agreed that paper-intensive processes are a significant source of wasted time and 6 out of 10 view this as having a major impact on their bottom line.

Let’s look at the case of Save The Children, one of Norway’s largest NGOs raising money towards funding projects for children in the areas of health, education, child protection and child rights governance. Every year, over 2000 hours are spent processing paper-based registration forms from new donors recruited on the street – time and resources that could be better spent on helping the world’s children. Not only is the paper-based registration process just time-consuming, it’s prone to errors as well. These inefficiencies results in a loss of 1000 potential new givers annually, and subsequently a significant loss of revenue for the organization.
Aside from businesses and organisations, professionals such as doctors are suffering from the inefficiencies of papers and forms as well. This can be seen from a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, which found that for every hour physicians were seeing patients, they were spending nearly two additional hours on paperwork.
This pandemic simply doesn’t make sense in this day and age; technology has advanced so much that we have rendered so many previous creations absolute; fax machines, pagers, even folding maps, yet we are still relying on papers to register or process documents.
As such, many businesses and organisations are indeed recognising this problem. However, as discovered by the Xerox study mentioned earlier, while SMEs prepare to digitize their paper processes, most will only turn to experts for recommendations since only a measly 1 in 5 respondents are aware of existing paper-free solutions in the market. The study shows that 47% will go to an office equipment dealer, 1 out of 4 will look to their IT reseller and 37% will turn to the product manufacturer.
